This Was Also My “Debut”…
As a Cornerman! 

When Claude called me up and asked me if I wanted to be one of his cornermen for his UFC debut at UFC 115 in Vancouver, I was like, “Hell yeah!”

I flew down on the Thursday before the fight to help out with the weight cut, do some soft tissue work, and just hang out and provide moral support. When I checked in, I saw Martin Kampmann and his crew checking in too. 

Later on, I bumped into Rich Franklin in the elevator – he was a lot bigger than I’d imagined. I also saw Mirko Crocop playing cards with his buddies. It was a pretty cool experience hanging around and chatting with fighters and coaches that I’d been watching for years.

On Thursday, we were on track for the weigh-in the next day. We did a light workout and spent a bit of time in the sauna, but the real work was to come on Friday…

We got up around 9am, chilled out for a bit, then started the weight cut. It was a relatively easy cut and Claude successfully weighed in at 169 lbs. Weigh-in day included a lot of waiting around and being shuttled from the hotel to the arena, but it was still pretty cool to watch Claude come out to a pretty packed house and he got some loud cheers from the Canadian fans.

Walking to the octagon, I was probably more nervous than Claude, as he’s a pretty cool cat. 

As you saw in the video above, there was nothing for me to be nervous about, as Claude dominated the 1st round, then secured the guillotine choke in round 2 to get the victory!

Being inside the octagon when Claude’s name was announced was a crazy feeling.

I could feel the energy from the crowd coursing through my veins and you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for a week. Here’s a pic of me with Claude inside the octagon as he was being interviewed by Joe Rogan after the fight:

All in all, it was an amazing experience and one I hope to do again soon.
